Alignment: When God Starts Putting Everything Back in Place

Alignment: When God Starts Putting Everything Back in Place

What Installing a Floor Taught Me About Alignment

Recently, my family and I were installing flooring in a newly renovated room in our basement. The room will eventually be a space for our kids to work on their businesses, so we were all down there putting it together piece by piece. If you have ever installed this type of flooring, you know that every board has to connect just right. You line one piece up with the next, tap it into place, make adjustments, and make sure it is completely aligned before you keep moving. Because here is what happens if you don't. You can be just slightly off in the beginning and barely notice it. It might only be a tiny gap or one board sitting a little differently than it should. You think, "It's fine. We can keep going." But several rows later, that tiny misalignment has become a much bigger problem. Now the boards aren't fitting together correctly. The lines are off. Gaps are appearing. Things aren't laying the way they should. And sometimes the only way to fix it is to pull everything back up until you get to the place where the misalignment started.

My Word for 2026

And as we were working on that floor, I thought, this is my word for 2026. Alignment. Everyone picks a word for the year, right? Mine was alignment. At the beginning of this year, I proclaimed that I wanted to align myself with exactly what God had for me. My mind. My properties. My children. My family. My businesses. My time. My purpose. All of it. I didn't want God to just be part of my plans. I wanted my plans to come under God.

And now, looking back through 2026, I realize He has been answering that prayer all year long. Maybe not exactly how I imagined He would, but He has absolutely been answering it. This has been a year of laying out my fleece before God and asking Him to make things clear. A year of testing what is good and what isn't. A year of pruning what isn't necessary. A year of confronting things that have become misaligned and being willing to go backward sometimes so God can straighten something before I move forward again.

Sometimes Alignment Requires Pulling Things Apart

That is the part about alignment we don't always talk about. Sometimes alignment requires pulling up some boards. Sometimes God has to take you back to the place where something shifted. Sometimes He has to expose an agreement you made, a relationship you entered, an attitude you developed, an opportunity you chased, or something you allowed into your life that was never supposed to be there. And sometimes we don't want to go backward because we have already invested so much time building forward. But God sees what we can't.

Test Everything and Hold On to What Is Good

First Thessalonians 5:21 tells us to "test everything that is said" and to hold on to what is good. That has become increasingly important to me. I don't want to accept something simply because it looks good. I don't want to align myself with someone simply because they appear successful. Outward success doesn't impress me the way it once might have. I want to know what is behind it. I want discernment. I want to know what God says.

Because there is a spiritual reality to this life that we cannot afford to ignore. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that we aren't fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against spiritual forces of evil. There are battles happening that aren't visible on a spreadsheet, in a meeting, in a contract, or across a conference table. That matters in our relationships. And business owners, it matters tremendously in our businesses.

Be Careful Who and What You Align With

Be careful who you come into agreement with. Be careful who you allow access to your vision. Be careful who you partner with. Be careful what you attach your name to. Be careful what spiritual practices you entertain because they have been repackaged as harmless, trendy, enlightening, or good for business. Not everything that looks like light comes from the Light.

If something isn't settling in your spirit, pay attention. If something consistently feels wrong even though you can't completely explain why, pray about it instead of overriding it. Ask God for discernment. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what you cannot see. We often call it our "gut," but I believe there are times when what we are experiencing is the Holy Spirit warning us, redirecting us, or protecting us.

Stay Alert and Guard What God Has Entrusted to You

The enemy is crafty at what he does. I think one of his greatest successes is convincing Christians that he isn't anywhere near them. If he can make us complacent, he doesn't have to work nearly as hard. We stop watching. We stop praying. We become busy. We become distracted. We start relying on our own wisdom, our own experience, our own success, our own people, our own money, our own systems. And somewhere along the way, seeking the one true God gets replaced by busyness. Then we are shocked when something happens.

But Scripture warned us. First Peter 5:8 says, "Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil." Then it gives us this sobering picture of him prowling around like a roaring lion, "looking for someone to devour." Those words get me every time. Looking for someone to devour. That means I need to be awake. I need to pray. I need to discern. I need to guard what God has entrusted to me.

Not Everything Deserves Access

And sometimes people can become distractions in that process. Sometimes relationships, opportunities, partnerships, and even our own desires can pull us away from what God is doing. That doesn't mean we walk around suspicious of everybody or labeling people as enemies. Scripture tells us our battle isn't against flesh and blood. But it does mean we stop giving everything and everyone automatic access to us. Not everything should receive a yes. Not everyone should receive access. Not every opportunity deserves alignment. Test everything. Pray about everything. And when God says no, trust His no.

When God Says Surrender, Surrender

When He tells you to surrender something, surrender it. When He exposes an idol, tear it down. When He shows you something you have elevated into a position that belongs to Him, repent. And we need to be especially careful about trying to mix Jesus with things that are spiritually opposed to Him. We cannot half-dabble in Jesus and half-dabble in the occult and call ourselves aligned. Jesus didn't leave that door open.

In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." Not a way. The way. There comes a point when we have to decide who we serve.

Alignment Is Spiritual Before It Is Strategic

God has been calling me deeper into understanding that alignment isn't simply about getting my businesses organized, fixing my schedule, managing my properties better, or making sure everything in my life runs efficiently. Alignment is first spiritual. Everything else flows from there.

Romans 12:2 tells us not to copy the behavior and customs of this world but to allow God to transform us into a new person by changing the way we think. Then, Scripture says, we will learn to know God's will for us—what is good, pleasing, and perfect. That is alignment. It is allowing God to change the way I think so I can recognize what He wants.

It is asking, "God, does this please You?" before asking, "Will this make me money?" It is asking, "Is this person someone You want me aligned with?" before asking, "What can this connection do for me?" It is asking, "Does this honor You?" before asking, "Will people approve?" And that has been one of the biggest lessons of this year for me.

Success Without Alignment Does Not Interest Me

Success without alignment doesn't interest me. I don't care how big something becomes if God isn't in it. I don't care how impressive something looks if maintaining it requires me to compromise what I believe. I don't care how much money an opportunity could produce if accepting it requires disobedience. Because before I am a business owner, I am a child of God.

Before I am responsible for employees, buildings, payrolls, customers, growth plans, properties, or anything else God has entrusted to me, I belong to Him. And I think sometimes, especially as business owners, we get this backward. We pray, "God, bless my business." Maybe sometimes the better prayer is, "God, align my business."

God, Align My Business

Align my motives. Align my leadership. Align my relationships. Align my decisions. Align my money. Align my calendar. Align the people around me. Align my attitude. Align my heart. And if something has to be pulled apart to accomplish that, give me the courage to let You pull it apart. Because I would rather pull up ten rows of flooring today than build an entire room on something that was crooked from the beginning.

Hardship and Misalignment Are Not the Same Thing

The Christian life doesn't promise us an easy life. Following Jesus doesn't mean we won't experience trauma, disappointment, loss, betrayal, hard seasons, difficult people, financial pressure, or circumstances we don't understand. Scripture is actually very clear that trouble will come. But hardship and misalignment are not the same thing.

There can be tremendous joy in the middle of tremendous difficulty when you know you are walking where God told you to walk. There can be peace that doesn't make sense. There can be victory before the circumstances even change. There can be freedom in knowing, "This is hard, but I know I'm where God told me to be." That is what I want. I don't want an easy life nearly as much as I want an aligned one.

A Call Back to Alignment

I believe God is calling His people back into alignment. Back to holiness. Back to His Word. Back to prayer. Back to discernment. Back to deciding that if Jesus is Lord, then He gets to actually be Lord. Ephesians 4:1 tells us to "lead a life worthy of your calling." That means something.

Our lives should look different because of the One whose name we carry. Our businesses should look different. Our leadership should look different. Our homes should look different. Our relationships should look different. Our decisions should look different. And when something gets out of alignment, we don't have to keep building on top of it simply because we've already come this far.

We can stop. We can repent. We can surrender. We can pull the boards back up. We can return to the place where things shifted and allow God to put them back where they belong.

What Has Become Misaligned?

And business owners, maybe that is the question we need to ask ourselves today. What in my life or business has become misaligned with God? Maybe the frustration isn't entirely about your employees. Maybe the anxiety isn't entirely about your revenue. Maybe the exhaustion isn't entirely about your workload. Maybe the attitude you've been carrying is pointing to something deeper. Maybe God has been trying to get your attention.

Before we troubleshoot another system, hire another person, launch another product, buy another property, create another strategy, or chase another opportunity, perhaps we need to get before God and ask Him to search us first. Jesus gave us the order in Matthew 6:33: "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."

Seek Him First

Seek Him first. Not after the business. Not after the meeting. Not after the emails. Not after everybody else's needs have consumed every ounce of us. First. Because we are children of Christ before we are CEOs, owners, leaders, mothers, fathers, employers, or entrepreneurs.

Lord, Pull Up What Needs to Be Pulled Up

So this year, I am still holding onto my word. Alignment. And I think I understand it differently now than I did when I first chose it. Alignment isn't God making everything fit into the life I planned. Alignment is me surrendering my plans until my life fits into His. And if He has to pull up a few boards to get me there, then Lord, pull them up.

Show me where I am misaligned. Show me what needs to go. Show me what needs to stay. Show me who I should walk with and when I need to walk away. Give me discernment to test everything, humility to admit when I am wrong, courage to obey when obedience costs me something, and wisdom to recognize Your voice above all the noise.

I Want to Be Able to Say I Was Faithful

Align my mind. Align my family. Align my children. Align my businesses. Align my time. Align my properties. Align my relationships. Align my purpose. Align my heart. Because at the end of all of this, I don't simply want to be able to say I was successful. I want to be able to say I was faithful.
