Don’t Forget Who Crowned You: Giving God the Credit for Your Success

May 12, 20253 min read

I've been reading through the book of Proverbs and the wisdome is amazing and profound. A reminder of godly principles we need to embody. I'll share what I'm learning as I study the scriptures in Proverbs.

For me, as a business owner who has experienced both failure and success, it's easy to be proud at times of your accomplishments, which is important to feel that you are working hard, learning well, doing ok. Self-talk that encourages us to not give up matters, and it comes in forms of realizing you are good at something, or you are doing something well. While taking pride in a job well done, is a temporary feeling, in a culture that often praises hustle over humility and ego over eternity, it's easy to get caught up in our own accomplishments as the reason for our success alone. But Scripture reminds us: true success—lasting, meaningful, kingdom-aligned success—comes only through God.

“To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power. By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth.”
Proverbs 8:13-16 (NIV)

What a powerful reminder: God is the One who raises leaders, bestows wisdom, and grants authority. Any influence we carry, any platform we build, any "kingdom" we create—it all flows from His hand.

Success Without God Isn’t Success at All

In a world where self-made success is glorified, God warns against forgetting the Source:

“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.”
Deuteronomy 8:17-18 (NIV)

Our businesses, our promotions, our impact—it’s not just the result of grit or good marketing. It’s a gift. and while we are patting ourselves on the back, let's ensure, we are praising the Creator who gave you the creativity to do well.

You’re Crowned for a Kingdom Purpose

Whether you're leading a team, growing a business, or simply influencing your family and community, remember: your crown is not your own. It's on loan from Heaven for the sake of God's glory.

“No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven.”
John 3:27 (NLT)

When we acknowledge that everything we’ve built is from Him, we position ourselves for even greater stewardship—and avoid the trap of pride that leads to a fall.

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
James 4:6 (NIV)

Crown Your Day with Gratitude

Let your success stories be testimonies of God’s favor, not self-promotion. Celebrate wins—but do so with worship. Before you post about your accomplishments, pause to praise. Before you plan your next step, ask for His direction.

“In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:6 (NIV)

If your success ever becomes about you instead of Him, it’s not success—it’s ego with a good PR team.

Stay humble. Stay hungry. And never forget the One who crowned you.
