The Weight of Being a Master: Protecting Your Purpose from Burnout
In the Bible, when it talks about “masters,” it’s really talking to those of us who are business owners.
We don’t always think of it that way, but if you’re called to employ others, build systems, and grow something that blesses people, you’re walking in a divine assignment. Being a master isn’t just a choice — it’s a calling. A burning inside of us to employ and care for a harvest of people.
And with that calling comes responsibility. Scripture says in Colossians 4:1, “Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” That’s not just good leadership advice — that’s a kingdom mandate. As business owners, we are called to treat our team with integrity, fairness, and justice, not because it’s easy, but because we ourselves are under authority. We serve a Master too, and He cares deeply about how we lead the people entrusted to us.
But here’s the truth most people don’t talk about: If we don’t protect our purpose and provide peace for ourselves by organizing our anointing to be entrepreneurs, bosses, and business owners, we’re letting down way more than just ourselves. We risk losing everything — not just the business, but the people, the vision, the fruit.
Being a “master” is a high calling, and it comes with a heavy weight. If we don’t build buffers when things get tough, if we don’t put in layers of help, we’ll burn out from the very thing we were called to carry.
Let me tell you something from experience. When you start saying, “I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” that’s not a lack of motivation — that’s a sign of broken systems.
Pain has a purpose. It’s trying to show us something. So instead of pushing it away, I’m challenging you: Lean into the pain. Let it show you where the gaps are. Who’s missing from your team? What system is broken? Where are you shouldering something you shouldn’t be carrying alone?
When we started one of our newest companies, it was clear from the beginning that this thing was going to take off. Within just a few months, we grew it into a high six-figure company.
But we didn’t have the people. We didn’t have the layers. We didn’t have the buffer. So even though the money came in fast, burnout came faster.
We took a step back. We lost a few clients. And we learned.
We recognized early that if we wanted to grow this to a seven-figure business within two years, we would have to put the right people in place. We had to shift our thinking — because here’s the truth most people don’t want to say out loud:
You can be running a half-a-million-dollar company and not be able to take one penny of salary.
Let me say that again: You can be bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue and still not be paying yourself.
That’s when business gets hard. That’s when your purpose starts to feel like a prison.
When we looked at our expenditures, our processes, and our systems, we knew something had to give. And for us to maintain peace — not just success — we had to make hard choices. We had to build the buffer. And that meant putting people first, even when it hurt.
There were seasons we gave up our own salaries just to make sure our team was taken care of. Because here’s what I’ve learned: If you want to build something that lasts beyond you, something sustainable and scalable, something that serves others well — then it can’t be me first.
It has to be team first.
The answer is people. Layers. Systems. Buffers. Boundaries. Help.
Because a good “master” can’t be good if he is too busy licking busy business wounds and becomes selfish. I’ve found that when business hurts, I get selfish. And a selfish master can’t serve well.
So we have to pause. We have to reset. We have to look at the structure, not just the strain. The people, not just the pressure. The calling, not just the chaos.
Because your purpose matters too much to let burnout be the end of your story.
