Sixteen and the Shift: A Mompreneur’s Reflection on Freedom and Presence
The Shift I Always Knew Would Come
Not gonna lie… this birthday stirred something in my heart. A little anxious, a little tender. Almost like I could feel the shift I always knew would come. The shift I worked so hard for all these years.
I hustled so one day I could have freedom, freedom financially and freedom with my time, so I could be fully present when this season arrived.
And unexpectedly, Mercy turning 16 on February 17 had me in the feels. It increased an urgency in me to lean in more to my kids.
There’s something about watching your child grow that makes time feel both beautiful and fragile.
Watching Them Find Their Wings
Mercy is planning for college next year through dual enrollment. Cort is stepping into high school as a homeschooler, stretching into new ventures of his own playing hockey and golf. They’re both launching little micro businesses this year, finding their wings.
And I keep thinking… only two more years before Mercy officially steps into adulthood.
Part of me feels excited to soak up every second of what’s ahead. Another part quietly grieves how quickly it all passed. It goes so fast while you’re busy building the dream you once prayed for.
The Reality of Building While Raising
I’ve always tried to be present. I’ve built businesses, homeschooled, led teams, and somehow held it all together with the Lord’s help.
Many long days.
Kids tagging along to business meetings.
Sitting in the backseat while mom and dad strategize company growth in the front.
We’ve been able to give them a lot and have them experience a lot. But they’ve also given a lot too. They have sacrificed as multi business owner kids.
A Gentle Whisper in This Season
This season feels like a gentle whisper reminding me that these moments under this roof won’t last forever.
So I feel the pivot again.
I’m choosing, again, to slow my heart down.
To linger longer at the kitchen table.
To say yes to extended porch coffee chats.
To cook more meals side by side.
To listen without letting my mind drift to projections, plans, and the next strategy.
To hold tight to these ordinary, sacred moments.
Saying No to Say Yes
The businesses will run. The teams are strong, and where they aren’t, we will strengthen them. Opportunities will always exist. But one day, sooner than I’m ready for, my kids will fly.
So I’m saying no a lot more, so I can say yes to them.
Rezin and I fought hard to build a life that would allow both of us to be here. Has it been perfect or easy? Absolutely not.
But right now, the hustle and the heartache to be here makes it worth what we’ve built and continue to build with powerful teams.
For the Entrepreneurs Fighting for Freedom
Why do I share this?
Because many of you are entrepreneurs. Mompreneurs. Business owners who feel the pull of providing while being present for your kids.
If you are fighting for your freedom and you feel discouraged or overwhelmed, I have been there, and I promise I will be there again.
It’s not easy to run multiple businesses and still be present for the things you value. It costs you something.
Fight and don’t quit.
Be creative.
Hire the right people and release them to do their job.
Stop apologizing that you are working yourself out of the job and that you want to just be a founder or an owner and less of the CEO or CFO. Put the right people in place.
I’m living proof it’s not easy, but it is possible.
And I will keep fighting to remain here the next several years so I can look back and say I was ever so present when my children were preparing to fly.
TALK TO ME ABOUT EXECUTIVE SUPPORT
Built Strong Executive Support Around Me
If you’re reading this and thinking, I want that freedom too, but I don’t even know where to start, I understand.
One of the biggest reasons I can slow down in this season is because I built strong executive support around me.
An Executive Virtual Assistant does not just help with tasks. They help you:
• Take operations off your plate
• Organize your calendar and priorities
• Manage communication and follow ups
• Create systems that reduce chaos
• Give you margin to think, lead, and be present
That margin is what allows me to linger at the kitchen table instead of living in my inbox.
