You can post your company values on every wall, but your team will follow your example, not your slogans. The truth is: culture is what you consistently tolerate and consistently celebrate.

A Hard Truth for Leaders

At one point, I realized I was unintentionally training people to underperform. Why? Because I was afraid to confront. I made excuses for people who were consistently out of alignment with our values. I wanted everyone to love their job, even if that meant underperforming was the cost. But then i’d secretly burn inside feeling frustrated and caught up in doing it myself.

Boundaries Are Kindness, Not Control

Clear expectations and healthy accountability don’t make you a tyrant—they make you trustworthy. When your team knows what’s expected and what’s at stake, they rise or they release themselves.

How to Align Your Team Without Losing Your Soul

  1. Start With Vision – Be crystal clear about who you are and what matters most.

  2. Set the Standard – Don’t assume people know. M3 it Model it, Mimic it, Manage it until they do it your way every time.

  3. Correct Quickly – Delayed confrontation becomes confusion.

  4. Celebrate Alignment – Catch people doing it right. Affirm what you want repeated.

When You Level Up, Expect Resistance

Not everyone will come with you as you evolve. And that’s okay. Some will step up. Others will step out. Don’t chase people who are committed to chaos—build with those aligned in purpose. Don’t be afraid to let people go, even friends. Not everyone is on your ship to watch it sail, some are poking holes, and they gotta go.
